Apples NEW iOS5 Operating System
By mr-burns
On the 12th October 2011 Apple launched they're new operating system the iOS5 to accompany its new iPhone 4S product. The NEW iOS5 gives current iPhone and iPad users the chance to have a taste of some of the upcoming features that will be included in the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4S will be released on the 14th October 2011. What better way to give us a glimpse of the magic! Oh.... and want the iPhone 4S even more.
Obviousely Apple hasn't decided to include all the amazing new features that are on the iPhone 4S into the iOS5 ready for older iPhone and iPad users but they have inlcuded alot of new stuff to grab our attention with.
Installation
The installation from older iOS's to the NEW iOS5 is easy. If your already used to Apple products such as the iPhone you'll already know how iTunes works and how you can use it. Once you connect your iPhone you'll need to update to the lastest ITunes version to make the upgrade to the new iOS possible. After this update you'll never really need iTunes again on your computer because most your needs can be met over the iCloud where everything can be stored online (music, pictures and documents etc).
Once iTunes is installed click 'Upgrade' within the iPhone tab of iTunes. The upgrade should take around an hour to do. It will backup all your data thats already on it, ready to be placed back onto the iPhone when it has a clean new shiny OS5. Just to make sure nothing goes wrong ensure you have synced with iTunes before hand because there have been reports of contacts etc not being placed back onto the iPhone if you don't back it up.
Once iOS5 has been installed your ready to go! Your iPhone will guide you through a number of stages asking if you would like to use the iCloud, put contacts on the iCloud and it will highlight some of the new features too. Once thats done, your all set! Have a look around and see what you think. There is no immediate changes howver there are a number of new interesting features:-
New Features
The new iOS5 comes with a whole new wide range of features. Heres just a few of them:-
iCloud
The iCloud has become the centre of the new iOS5 where everything can be backed up onto the internet. Instead of having to update your iPhone over iTunes through a wired connection the iCloud allow you to dump what you need onto the iCloud using a simple application that can be downloaded for FREE. The iCloud allows for up to 5GB to be stored initially but more space can be purchased dependant on the space needed.
Newsstand
The newsstand is a new feature that allows people to download magazines and newspapers for free. It can really act as a great place to look at subscriptions that you want to read. Instead of having to read them physically you can read them on your iPhone.
There have been some feed back about how the app can be downloaded to the newsstand then issues to be downloaded after that will have to paid for. It leaves very little to be read for free.
iMessenger
Updated since the last OS with extra abilities to send unlimted messages over Wi-Fi and 3G connections allowing users to save on the number of texts sent over the network. Clever stuff!
Stuff in the 4S but not in the iOS5
The biggest feature missing from the iOS5 is Apple's virtual assistant called Siri. Siri is an inbuilt app that comes with the iPhone 4S that will announce messages to you. Siri allows you talk to your phone, asking questions. Obviousley theres limits to what can be asked but a hugh jump forward in what has been done before. This aspect is one of the most tempting that will draw people towards buying the iPhone 4S
